Obituary

Belmont - Mary Elizabeth (Palzkill) Carey-Nihles age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Edenbrook of Platteville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at ST. PHILOMENA CATHOLIC CHURCH in Belmont. Burial will be in the Resurrection Cemetery in Belmont. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:00 until 10:50 AM at the church. A luncheon will follow at the Sports Page.

Mary was born September 11, 1932, the daughter of John and Catherine (Rock) Palzkill. She grew up in Hollandale with her family, but spent a lot of time in Mineral Point with her Grandma Rock. Mary graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1950.

Mary was a member of St. Michael's / St. Philomena Catholic Churches. She was a homemaker until her children were in high school, then went to work in Belmont as a packager for Besnier/Lactalis USA Inc. cheese factory. Mary was part of the Lafayette County Home and Community Education, and enjoyed sewing blankets, braiding rugs and working in her flower gardens.

Mary is survived by her husband, Merlyn Nihles; ten children Dennis J. Carey of Blanchardville, WI, David A. (Pamela) Carey of Belmont, WI, Joseph P. (Sally) Carey of Belmont, WI, Kevin J. (Ranae) Carey of Ionia, Iowa, Kelly A. Carey of Belmont, WI, Cheryl M. (Richard) Bockhop of Platteville, WI, Steven D. (Judi) Carey of Darlington, WI, Mary Kay (Michael) Chambers of Darlington, WI, Paul M. (Jodie) Carey of Cuba City, WI and Timothy C. (Jaime Nodolf) Carey of Belmont, WI; two step children Tony Nihles of Lancaster and Christina (Tim) Gilbertson of Monroe; 26 Grandchildren, 31 Great-Grandchildren, 9 Step Grandchildren and 7 Step Great Grandchildren.

She is further survived by three sisters, Dorothy Dodds of Wayzata, MN, Helen Schmitz of Mineral Point, WI and Catherine (Kay) Oomens of Platteville, WI, and one brother, Gene Palzkill of Mineral Point, WI.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Dale J. Carey, granddaughter Samantha Nodolf-Carey, Vicki Jenson, sister Patricia Stomer Bemus and brother Norbert Palzkill, sister-in-laws Jacqueline Palzkill and Myrna Palzkill, brother-in-laws Jim Dodds, LaVerne Schmitz, Fred Oomens, Robert Stromer, and Vic Bemus, two step sons Randy Nihles and Terry Nihles.
