Obituary

Mineral Point - John J. Carey, 83, of Mineral Point, passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

He was born on May 30, 1929 the son of William and Edna (Schmitz) Carey. John was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Mineral Point American Legion Post 170. Upon his return from service he became a well known livestock dealer, a partner in harness racing, owner - operator of Ridge Lumber Yard, and a passionate successful farmer. Up until his final days he was tending to his cattle and enjoyed daily visits to his farm. In 1953 he married Janice DeMuth and they were blessed with five children. John was a Badger football season ticket holder for nearly 50 years and was a proud member of the Mendota Gridiron Club.

John is survived by his wife Janice of 59 years; his children, Renee (Pete) Rizzo, Ron (Joan) Carey, Jean (Jeff) Rickman, Marcia (Bob) Wiseman, and Laura (Loren) Schaaf; his 6 grandchildren, Dan (Lydia) Carey, Chelsey (Andrew) Cardona, Haley Carey, Kyle and Travis Schaaf, and Morgan Wiseman; his 2 great-grandchildren, Emily Carey and James Cardona; his sister, Rosalie Logue; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Max and Bernice DeMuth, his brothers, Gerald, Wayne, Dick, Bill, and Bob, his sisters, Marion Wilson and Jean Turek, and brothers-in-law, Bill Logue and Don Turek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Ss. MARY & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Fr. Monte Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the Mineral Point American Legion Post No. 170. A visitation will be held on Friday, October 5, 2012 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME in Mineral Point.

A special thanks for the exceptional care provided by Dr. Paul Biere, Dr. Aaron Dunn, Dr. Paul Harari and Dr. Greg Hartig and the wonderful staff at University Hospital ENT Clinic and Radiation Oncology.
