Mineral Point - Gilbert John Steffes, age 87, of Mineral Point, passed away of a broken heart on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family, one week following the death of his wife of 57 years.

Gilbert was born in Kendall Township, on January 8, 1925, the son of Matt and Mary Agnes (Friedies) Steffes. He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Ruppert on February 19, 1955, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dodgeville. They farmed together in Waldwick for 13 years, then moved to their farm in Mineral Point where he enjoyed many years of gardening, fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his family.

Gilbert is survived by his children David of Dodgeville, Glen (Stephanie) of Janesville, Marjorie Wahl (Bucky Rux) of Mineral Point, and James (Jean) of Mineral Point; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen Springer of Mineral Point; a brother, Emanuel (Helen) of Mineral Point; sister-in-laws, Donna Steffes of Mineral Point, Jean Steffes of Platteville, and Catherine (Donovan) Kopp of Waunakee, and two brother-in-laws, John and Ernest (Delores) Ruppert of Dodgeville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae; his parents, infant twin brother and sister, Matt and Mary Agnes; sister, Marie; brothers, Ernest, John, and Bernard; brother-in-law, Ernest Springer, and infant son, William.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ?? a.m. at St. Mary's/St. Paul's Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 28, with Father James Hinnen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at the Gorgen Funeral Home in Mineral Point.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hodan Center, Mineral Point Rescue Squad, or Upland Hills Hospice of Dodgeville.
