Mineral Point - Gary Ray Johnson, age 69, of Mineral Point, Wisconsin and recently of Port Orange, Florida died April 12, 2013 at UW Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Gary Johnson, the son of L. Fred and Lavera (Dyer) Johnson, was born in Mineral Point, on September 20, 1943. Gary was the 9th child in a family of 10. He spent his youth in the Mineral Point community and was a graduate of the high school there in 1961.
Gary married Ruth Wendtlandt on July 25, 1964 at Hope Lutheran Church in Mineral Point, where they were active members for many years. They were married for 26 years and had two daughters: Jodi and Janelle. Gary worked for over 40 years in road construction and was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 139. In recent years, Gary had retired to Port Orange, FL where he had made many close friends. He enjoyed NASCAR, golfing, and attending his grandchildren's activities.
Gary loved his family more than anything. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Jodi (Dan) Chambers of St Charles, IL; Janelle (Dan) Tavela of Franklin, WI; grandchildren: Evan Chambers, Sawyer Chambers, Hannah Chambers, and Adeline Tavela; siblings: Norman (Marilyn), Charmaine Weitzel, James (Pat), Joanne (Sherman) Dammen; Jack (Shirley), Ken (Ruth), Carole (Doug) Grunow; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Darold, his sister Janice (Amenda); his brother-in- laws, Jack Enzenroth and Fritz Weitzel.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH in Mineral Point. Pastor Rich McLeer will officiate. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery in Dodgeville. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.
