Mineral Point - Elelya Brackett (Baker) Hector age 99, died at the Uplands Health Center, Dodgeville, on November 6, 2015.
She was born on May 16, 1916, in Berkeley, California, to John Blair and Lelia California (Brackett) Baker. She was an avid student, receiving her BA from University of California - Berkeley, MA from William and Mary, Virginia, and again, North Central College, Evanston, IL. She taught in California, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Japan. She was also an avid traveler, visiting Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and (pre-war) Europe in the 1930's.
On July 6, 1941, she married John R. Hector, a career artillery officer in the U. S. Army, who saw action in Europe and Korea, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1966. They had two tours of duty in Germany, one in Japan, and postings in seven states. As such she spoke and taught several languages. Upon retirement, they lived in Hinsdale, Illinois. John died in 1999. Elelya was Principal of Lane Elementary School, Hinsdale, IL, 1969-1982. In 1982, she retired to Mineral Point, WI, where she taught Elementary Computer Science, and High School Japanese Language, until retiring a second time at age 90.
Meanwhile, she continued her travels, making frequent visits to China, Japan, Russia (on the Trans-Siberian Express), and Europe (sailing down the Danube). She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Native Daughters of the Golden West, a life member of the Episcopal Church, the National Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority.
She is survived by her five children, The Rev. Dr. J. Robert Hector (Barbara), Sara Elelya Hector (LTC, U.S. Army retired), Dr. Richard Edward Hector, M.D. (Patricia), Alfred Bruce Hector (Patricia), Leonard Sill Hector (Julee); seven grandchildren; eight great-grand children.
The Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 403 High Street, Mineral Point, WI 53565 at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 with the Rev. Brian Backstrand, celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church, Mineral Point.
