Obituary

Pasadena, CA / Mineral Point - Edgar Charles Winn, age 80, passed away in his sleep on Sunday, January 12, 2014 in Pasadena, California.

Charles was born to Edgar Homer Winn and Alberta Hazel Harker Winn of Mineral Point on July 9, 1933. From his birth in Dickinson, North Dakota, a restless exploration took him across the country and the world. He graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California, in 1959 with a degree in history and a focus on Asian studies, the beginning of a lifelong connection to Asia. He served briefly in the Korean War, with a posting in Japan.

He worked for IBM during the 1960's in Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand then worked in the export import business, living in California, Belgium, Singapore and Hong Kong, eventually running "Charlie's Bar" as a retirement hobby in Tianjin, China with his second wife, Tien Ho Winn. They then settled down in Victoria, British Columbia. Charles spent his last three years in Pasadena.

Charles will be remembered as a many-sided person, quick with witticisms and observations and generous with hellos on the street. He was a voracious consumer of news, reading the daily paper and many magazines while CNN played in the background. He will be fondly remembered by many.

Charles is survived by his two children from his first marriage, Sherry Ann Winn of Los Angeles, and Robert Charles Winn of Brooklyn, and two grandchildren, Jeremiah Pollack and Amelia Winn.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife, Tien Ho Winn, who all are interred in Graceland Cemetery, Mineral Point.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gorgen Funeral Home in Mineral Point. A visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the Gorgen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
