Mineral Point - Don David Hilgenberg, age 73, passed away at his home in Mineral Point, on Sunday, January 26, 2020.
He was born in Kaukauna, WI on March 20, 1946 the son of John and Dorothy (Baier) Hilgenberg, and was raised in a family of 8 boys and 2 girls. He attended UW Madison and graduated from UW-Platteville. While in Madison, he authored a number of books of both poetry and prose, and also published several regional magazines. He was definitely a person of note in the art and literary community.
He settled in Iowa County, where he met and eventually married the love and perhaps savior of his life, Barbara Lewis. Don and Barb shared more than twenty-five years together in Mineral Point, working in the community and with their congregation. Barbara's passing in 2015 was a major blow from which he was still recovering when he passed.
Don is survived by his son Elia and his wife Vy Dung and his grandchildren Evan and Violet all of Seattle, WA; his brothers Jack (Pat) of Florida, Dennis (Annie) of Richland Center, Frank (Fran) of Florida and Rich (Terri) of California; his sisters Hope Moede of Neenah and Marilyn (Joe) Vercuilen of Kaukauna; special nephew Duke Rood of Lancaster; his step daughter Teresa (Steve) Lucey and family of Lancaster.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barb Lewis, a twin sister at birth Donna, his brothers Tom, Bob and Steve Hilgenberg from Dodgeville.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 12:00 noon at the GORGEN McGINLEY & AYERS FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mineral Point. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 until 11:55 a.m. at the funeral home.
