Barbara Jo Lewis, age 69, of Mineral Point, passed away peacefully at home with her husband Don Hilgenberg on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 after a courageous battle against ovarian cancer.

She was born to Mardell Lewis in Iowa City, Iowa on November 9, 1945. She attended Belle Plaine Senior High School. Barbara gave birth to her only child, a daughter, Teresa (Dedrick) Lucey on December 8, 1961. She worked in the VISTA program studying drug and alcohol abuse counseling in Independence, Iowa. In September of 1976, Barbara and her daughter moved to Lancaster, Wisconsin where she worked as an AODA counselor and was the AODA program supervisor at Unified Counseling.

In August 1991, Barbara was united in marriage to the love of her life Don Hilgenberg. The couple resided in Mineral Point. Barbara and Don dedicated 15 years of their lives to Narcotics Anonymous helping addicts and alcoholics throughout the area. Barbara retired from Unified Counseling in July 2007 after 30 years of service and then worked four more years as a clinical substance abuse counselor at the methadone clinic for Madison Health Services until May 2011.

Barbara was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed canning foods, baking bread, knitting and crocheting and preparing large holiday meals for her family. She loved spending time with her family, especially her beloved great grandchildren. She was fond of all animals, specifically her cats Max, Lilly and Misty. She also loved the Milwaukee Brewers and rarely missed a game on television.

Barbara was a dedicated member of the Platteville Branch of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for the past 18 years.
