Alice R. Baker's Obituary
St. Charles, IL / Mineral Point - Alice Harriet Ridley Baker, age 95, formerly of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, passed away September 27, 2017 in St. Charles, Il where she and her husband, Merton, moved in 2005 to be closer to their children.
The daughter and only child of Dr. and Mrs. S.R. Ridley, she was born in Dodgeville, WI on April 28, 1922. Educated in Mineral Point public schools, she graduated in the Class of 1939 followed by 4 years at the University of Wisconsin graduating with a BA degree in 1943. Upon graduation, she was one of the first women employed by Price, Waterhouse & Company at the height of World War II as a junior accountant. Three years later, upon the illness and death of her mother, she returned to Mineral Point and worked in the accounting department of WP&L Company until her marriage to Merton O. Baker in 1947.
Alice was very active in Brownies, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Junior Choir mother in the United Church of Christ, Senior Choir member, Sunday School teacher, President of Mineral Point Women's Club, and becoming the first woman president of the council of the UCC in the state of Wisconsin. Later, after raising her family, she attended graduate school at UW Platteville earning a master's degree in teaching. After 10 years of teaching English, substitute teaching and librarian in Mineral Point Schools, she retired.
She deeply loved her family, home, many friends, and especially Mineral Point.
Alice was the loving spouse of Merton for 64 years until his passing in 2011, devoted mother of Ann (Rob), Bill, and Brian and very proud grandmother of Whitney (Patrick) Schultz and Jessica (Brian) Ashley. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Merton, two daughters-in-law, Lynne (Bill), Wendy (Brian) and her son Brian.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST in Mineral Point. Pastors Rich McLeer and Beryl Melcher will officiate with burial in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ and Graceland Cemetery.
