Ridgeway / Mineral Point - Laura A. Fitzsimons - Thorpe, age 103, of Ridgeway, formerly of Mineral Point, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Bloomfield Manor in Dodgeville. Laura was born on August 22, 1906 to William and Elizabeth (Stephens) Fitzsimons in Mineral Point. She attended grade school in Mineral Point and graduated from high school in Avoca. After high school, Laura attended and graduated from Iowa County Teacher’s Training School in Dodgeville and later earned a teaching degree from Platteville State Teacher’s College. Laura taught country school near Ridgeway, clerked for the State Motor Vehicle Department in Madison and later went back to country school teaching outside Barneveld and Ridgeway. Besides living in Southwest Wisconsin, Laura lived in Colorado, New Mexico and California and visited most other Western and Southern States. In retirement, Laura loved working among her plants and flowers at her Ridgeway home. She was never happier than when she was weeding, mounding and digging. Laura lived her last three years at Bloomfield Manor where the nurses and staff took magnificent care of her.
Laura is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ortiz; her son, Harold Thorpe; her grandchildren, Von Ortiz, Valerie Garban, Vicki Hanson, Lisa Thorpe, Chris Thorpe, Tim Thorpe; and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH in Ridgeway. Rev. Rom A. Pegram will officiate. Burial will be held in Graceland Cemetery in Mineral Point. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church.
