Mineral Point / Madison - Malvern "Mel" H. Benson, age 74, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2012 at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Madison. He was born in Mineral Point on November 16, 1937, the son of John and Helen (Jelliffe) Benson. He worked at Goodweiler Veterinary Clinic, George Wendtland Inc., Ivey Construction, and the Iowa County Highway Dept.. In 1995, he suffered a spinal cord injury due to an illness. He spent his final years in Madison closer to family.
Mel is survived his brothers, John, Gary (Shirley), Jim (Peggy), and Claire, and his sisters; Evaline and Marion, also many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Warren (Virginia), Marlin (Cheryl), Eugene, and a sister Lulu Belle (Bob) Sweeney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Ss MARY & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Fr. James Hinnen will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at St. Mary's Hospital and the staff at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Madison.
